Review in RIFT Rock June 2005

Every time there’s news that Ulver is releasing another album the thought that can come to mind is that of a question which asks “What will they be doing this time?”. Every Ulver album has something different to offer, completely. Even the soundtracks they did were something they didn’t take full on before and solely based an entire release off that one style which is not a style at all but a mystery often now. “Blood Inside” is another “What the fuck is this?

This time, its almost a psychedelic rock, and I say that in all seriousness, it has the atmosphere, vocals, and spacey drumming style of some sort of crazy psychedelic rock experimentation going on, and I think they might be doing heavy amounts of LSD to make an easy drug assumption to explain the bizarre behavior. But because it is Ulver, it’s done perfectly; sort of a Pink Floyd meets King Crimson collision happening at time, as can be heard well in the second track of the disc “For The Love Of God”. The other tracks on the album spin into all sorts of resemblances of new wave, dark ambience, twisted beats that of Tricky-esque and the overall operatic approach to the singing is something that you won’t hear anywhere else.

These men are gods doing drugs not known to man kind. Whatever tier these guys are on, it’s beyond anything of the time period we are in as Ulver is jetting light years ahead of everything. No way could anyone have predicted this group in a million years. “Blood Inside” just shows off their fine tuned power, and rightfully so.
