WHEN TEN
The legend is back and it's a friggin' jubilee. Lars Pedersen's WHEN is out with album no. 10.
Those already familiar with the man/myth will know the dark impressions of the first fifteen years. Ominous cut-ups and collages, of factories, war zones, clocks ticking, choirs and strings; and the grotesque hearses, moans of the dying, rats and flagellants' whips.
You will also know that WHEN's two previous albums,
The lobster boys and
Pearl-harvest, have been letting the sunshine in. Strange "pop" concoctions, mixing sixties psychedelia, naïveté, children's records, cartoon looniness, Bollywood samples and Arabic pop-culture with the expanded reality of the mad professor.
The present opus,
Whenever, is an all this.
It starts off with field recordings from the market in Marakesh, looped in layers with faintly perceptible religious chants. It continues into an Arabic trance, then warmer acoustic guitar melancholia before of course those deranged Disney playgrounds. A longer and fast piece with guitars and xylophones takes it all down. We love it and know you're going to dig it and depart too.
